Records show incumbent Mike Woodard relies heavily on previous campaign money and contributions from special interest groups while challenger Sophia Chitlik draws on significant familial support.
@Scott, I looked over the campaign finance records for the Democratic candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction. Mo Green has a commanding lead on fundraising.
Eddings had raised less than $6,000.
Crumble did not have his paperwork in good order but also showed minimal fundraising activity.
Green had raised over $220,000 from mostly individual donors as of the December 31, 2023 reporting period. His latest report was due Feb 27 but has not yet been posted. His donors include former Gov Bev Perdue, former Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson, Patricia Cotham (the mother of Tricia Cotham who infamously switched parties) as well as some local names of note: Natalie Beyer, Nimasheena Burns, Michelle Burton, and Steve Schewel as well as other Durham political figures or former candidates for local office. The link for his individual donor report is here: https://cf.ncsbe.gov/CFOrgLkup/ReportDetail/?RID=213477&TP=REC
Quite often in the State cabinet races, much like our local races with our PACs, the Party chooses a nominee and throws their collective weight behind them to get them through to the primary. Mo Green appears to be that presumptive candidate in the Superintendent race.
Any chance you could do an article on candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction?
